DALO Day Centre

DALO day centre is situated in North London and serves the needs of vulnerable young adults in many North London Boroughs. Collaboratively, with Community Focus, I began leading weekly dance sessions here with a group of around 15 of their members, learning many different dance skills across our 10 week project. The classes touched upon basic contemporary and hip hop technique in addition to creative tasks to emphasise their teamwork skills and experiment with their movement range. The confidence of this group has flourished since I began here, ending with a performance to other members of the centre as well as staff on the last session. This was nerve wracking for the dancers but they performed amazingly finishing the first 10 week project on a high. I am delighted to say that because of the success of this initial project our classes have been extended further in 2017 to continue the development and confidence of the members.

As the classes continued to develop in 2017 I organised a special trip for the service users to a professional dance college to watch the dancers training in class. This was a very enriching experience for both the adults from DALO and the students at London Studio Centre. We watched a Jazz class and then at the end we had an opportunity to dance together learning a short phrase and trying a freestyle circle.I have to say, some of the confidence the DALO members showed made the London Studio Centre dancers look shy! It was a really inclusive and enjoyable experience all round and something I hope to be able to do again in the future.

Weekly dance sessions taking place in Lewisham and New Cross for those adults with SEND in the local areas. Their enthusiasm for dance is brilliant as we explore collectively the use of difference props and learn short phrases of choreography. I use big group freestyle exercises to improve the members confidence and week on week they are exploring different movements to improve their range and creativity.
