Weekly dance sessions taking place in a mainstream primary school across 1 academic year

My Role

During my time at East Wickham Primary School the P.E lead and I created a timetable that contained a mixture of sessions, some whole class, using cross curricular themes, and some targeted intervention style sessions.

Teaching Approach

Across the academic year this project allowed the whole school to take part in dance.  Sessions were planned and created the especially for the school and drew from cross curricular topics from other sessions to embed learning further. For many children at this school, this was their first experience of a dance session and the feedback from the students was very positive.

The timetable also allowed for targeted intervention sessions, offering children with SEND extra time to work on vital gross motor skills. By using sensory props and offering a range of vestibular movements our dance sessions gave much needed sensory input to keep these children well regulated and ready to learn in their other lessons.

Across the board these sessions provided the children with confidence, coordination and a place to be creative.

Testimonials

‘4S have loved taking part in dance lessons this term, they have thoroughly enjoyed learning new styles such as Bollywood and Street Dance. Zoe is a fantastic teacher who has formed great relationships with the children. 4S now say Thursday is their favourite day because of Dance!’
